"FREE SHIPPING" IS AVAILABLE ONLY ON ORDERS PLACED THROUGH THIS WEB SITE, NOT ON ORDERS PLACED DIRECTLY WITH THE STORE VIA PHONE, FAX, E-MAIL, POSTAL MAIL OR IN PERSON. If you select "free shipping" we ship orders to addresses in the 50 US states, charging only $2.50 for handling and insurance, but not charging for the actual postage or shipping charge by the carrier. This means our shipper selects the most economical shipping method, usually surface UPS or parcel post. If you need expedited shipping then select the shipping option desired, at the greater cost for that option. On orders placed directly with the store, rather than on this web site, the shipping charge consists of the actual cost of postage or UPS plus $2.00 for handling and packaging. Orders placed on the web site are generally able to be handled in a more automated manner, without having to process everything by hand. Therefore, the offer of "free shipping" on web site orders.
ORDER PICKUP AT THE STORE
Local Seattle area customers wishing to order on line may designate on the order page that they wish to pickup at our store at 2500 15th Ave West, Seattle, rather than having it shipped to you. Normal store hours are 8:00AM to 5:30PM weekdays, and 9:00AM to 5:00PM Saturdays, closed Sundays and major holidays. We will call or e-mail to advise that your order is ready for pickup, or if there is likely to be a delay beyond the normal days to ship quoted for the item(s).
SHIPPING TIME
Items in stock ordered before noon, Pacific Time, are usually shipped the same day. How long the order takes to reach you depends on the shipping method you choose. If you choose "free shipping" we select the most economical shipping method compatible with the type of merchandise ordered. Charts, maps, and books, may be sent by a special low-cost parcel post called "media mail", which is low priority, and slower than other mail. Media mail to the Atlantic coast from Seattle is typically a week and a half. To Alaksa or Hawaii, media mail may take two weeks or more. But to local addresses in Washington and Oregon, media mail may only take two or three days. An information field titled “usual days to ship” beneath each item description gives our estimate of how long after you order we expect to be able to ship the item to you. If the number “1” appears in this field, we normally carry this item in stock, but the web site is not updated for out-of-stock situations. If the number of days to ship is expected to be significantly longer than this “usual days to ship” figure our policy is to call or e-mail you about the delay. If time is critical to your needs, and you must be sure the item is in stock and can be shipped to meet your deadline requirements, we suggest you call the store directly to confirm the essential details, rather than ordering online. Once the item has been shipped, time in transit to reach you depends on the delivery method you choose. We ship Monday through Friday, and offer a full range of shipping options ranging from ground freight to next-day air delivery.
SHIPPING COST
It is not Captain’s policy to profit from shipping and packaging charges. On shipments where "free shipping" is not selected, we charge the actual cost of transportation quoted by the carrier you choose, plus $2.50 to cover packaging materials and labor. Sophisticated software links enable us to quote actual shipping charges at the time you order, based on the real cost according to weight, distance, and shipping method, rather than estimating based on dollar amount of the order. This way, customers who order expensive, light-weight items are not subsidizing shipping for customers ordering heavy, inexpensive items.
