WHAT’S NEW AT CAPTAIN’S
Pictorial calendars for 2012 include “San Juan Islands Inspirations“ and a new series of greeting/note cards with local photos by “Photos Happen”. Cartoonist Ray Troll has a new original calendar for 2012.
Captain’s vast inventory of flags -- both US, and foreign country, nautical and specialty flags – continues to expand. We now offer flags of all 50 US states, flags of all branches of the US military services, a special remembrance flag honoring the 9/11/2001 attack victims, star-spangled red white and blue windsocks (in three sizes), plus telescoping wind sock poles, and strings of colorful pennants (in three lengths). These, and many others join the old standbys like the US yacht ensign, yacht club officer flags, and US flags in every size, construction, and material.
We have twenty new models of “Fitover” brand sunglasses designed to fit over regular prescription glasses
There is a new National Geographic map of Southeast Alaska.. Also a new San Juan Island Map and Plant and Habitat Field guide is in stock.
We have the new Weems & Plath plotting tools kits, and the Power Squadron Basic Plotting Guide and booklet.
In our vast books inventory we have dozens of new titles. Here are a few:
“Glaciers, Bears, and Totems” by Elsie Hulsizer – “Sailing in Search of the Real Southeast Alaska” is a new cruising guide and narrative from a sailing yacht perspective.
“World Cruising Destinations” by Jimmy Corness, author of “World Cruising Routes” “A tour de force. For anyone contemplating an ocean cruise, chartering a boat, or just dreaming”.
“With the Old Breed” by E.B. Sledge, a New York Times Bestseller paperback, a classic World War II memoir.
“Salmon, Desserts & Friends” by Ladonna Gundersen. “Your complete guide to understanding, selecting, and enjoying the wild Pacific Salmon.” – it’s much more than a cookbook.
“The Complete Sailor”, new Second Edition, by David Seidman – a well-illustrated, understandable classic in learning the art of sailing.
Upstairs in instruments, Weems & Plath has a new, improved electronic barometer out. There is also a tiny TV camera called the Star-Shoot that mounts on the eyepiece of a telescope so that you can view on screen or record on a video recorder a TV image of what is being seen through the telescope.
For several years Captain’s has been able to print in our store NOAA charts in US waters with corrections up to the latest notices to mariners using the Ocean Grafix charts-on-demand system. Now, we are also able to print most of the US charts for foreign waters issued by NGA (formerly Defense Mapping Agency, formerly NIMA). These NGA charts on demand for foreign waters are of the current edition, but without corrections.
This same print-on-demand system also now allows us to print the NOAA bathymetric maps which have long been out of print. Bathymetric maps are like a topographic contour map of the ocean bottom. This series includes Bathymetric Fishing Maps along the Washington and Oregon coasts which also show bottom type as well as contour.
In addition, the latest wrinkle in charts on demand is that we can now print official nautical charts from the hydrographic agency of Norway in the Norwegian language, corrected up to date Of course, we continue to stock thousands of lithographed charts from the hydrographic agencies of Canada, England, France, Australia, New Zealand, and Fiji.
