Five study guide books are offered to prepare a qualified candidate for US Coast Guard endorsements as a qualified member of the engine department (Q.M.E.D.) in the areas of Oiler and General QMED, Advanced Marhine Shop, Boilers, Electricity, and Refrigeration & Air Conditioning. Each is sold separately. Each book contains instructional text teaching the concepts the Coast Guard tests for, diagrams and illustrations, and questions and answers taken from US Coast Guard exams.
QMED Oiler combines two former titles QMED General and QMED Oiler, thus QMED General is no longer published as a separate book. QMED Oiler covers fire fighting, fire safety and prevention, first aid, polution prevention, emergency signals and lifesaving, damage control, vessel construction, tools and instruments, piping systems, lubrication, filters, bearings, air compressor systems, steering gear, deck machinery, hydraulics, refrigeration & air conditioning, plus ten sections on diesel motor plants, and seven sections on steam plants and boilers.
QMED Refrigeration & Air Conditioning (for refrigeration engineer) contains six sections about refrigeration systems, components, controls, and refrigerants and their characteristics with illustrations, a chapter on ventilation and air conditioning, and nine groups of questions and answers on these subjects.
QMED Boilers (for Fireman/Watertender, Machinist, Junior engineer) contains eleven sections of questions and answers (but no instruction text or illustrations) on all aspects of boilers, feed water, fueling and firing, and maintenance and safety, as well as watchstanding, automation, and boiler theory and construction.
QMED Advanced Marine Shop (for Machinist, Pumpman, Deck Engineer, Junior Engineer) contains seven sections of instructional text, illustrations, and questions and answers in the areas of advanced bench work, advanced drilling operations, advanced threading operations, arc welding, oxy-acetylene welding and weld testing, micrometers, and lathe operations.
QMED Electricity (for Electrician, Deck Engineer, Junior Engineer) includes nine chapters with illustrations, instructional text, and questions and answers on electrical safety, Ohm's Law, Direct Current systems, Electrical Conductors, motors, generators, transformers and other electrical equipment, diesel-electric propulsion and basic electrical maintenance for workboat engineers.
