These volumes contain questions and answers with references given to the standard reference publications used by the Coast Guard in compiling exam questions, but no instructional text. They are preparation for merchant marine license examinations for Master and for Third Mate through Chief Mate Oceans and Near Coastal, Any Gross Tons.
Captain's sells the five "Murphy" study guide books separately, or as a five book set. The illustrations appropriate to the subjects in Books 1 through 5 are now included in those books. Please note that Captain Murphy says "color diagrams are no longer used for deck examination modules. Black and white illustrations or diagrams are now printed in the rear of deck examination booklets when they are required to answer a question." Book 1, Deck General covers marlinspike seamanship, cargo handling and stowage, watchkeeping, anchoring and mooring, ship handling and maneuvering, towing operations, ship stability and damage control, ship construction, ship's business, and the Great Lakes. 296 pages.
Book 2, Navigation General covers Nautical Astronomy, Aids to Navigation, Navigation Proceedures, Charts & Publications, Navigation Instruments, Magnetic and Gyro Compasses, Tides & Currents, Meteorology & Oceanography, Inland Navigation. 237 pages.
Book 3, Deck Safety covers communications, medical care & first aid, lifesaving, search & rescue, maritime law, fire prevention and firefighting appliances, principles of stability and trim, sailing vessels, offshore supply vessels. 426 pages.
Book 4, Rules of the Road covers both inland and international navigation rules (COLREGS). 151 pages, including illustrations in black and white.
Book 5, Navigation Problems covers ocean track plotting, celestial observations, terrestrial observations, piloting and chart plotting exercises. 360 pages.
NOTE: Some of these books are labeled "2010-11 Edition" and some are labeled "2011-12 Edition," and one book (Rules of the Road) is labeled "2015-16 Edition."
