The International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships, 1973, as modified by the Protocol of 1978 relating thereto (better known as MARPOL 73/78), is one of the most important international agreements on the subject of marine pollution.
The new consolidated edition provides an easy reference to the up-to- date provisions and unified interpretations of the articles, protocols and Annexes of the Convention. All amendments up to and including the 2000 amendments adopted by the Marine Environment Protection Committee by resolution MEPC.89(45) have been incorporated.
Although not yet in force, the new Annex VI (Regulations for the Prevention of Air Pollution from Ships) has also been included. It comprises the annex to the Protocol of 1997 to amend MARPOL 73/78 and makes mandatory the new Technical Code on Control of Emission of Nitrogen Oxides from Marine Diesel Engines (NOx Technical Code).
